ALCS Research Grants

One of the core activities of the ALCS is to encourage and promote academic research in all areas of Low Countries Studies. All ALCS members, from PhD students to Senior Lecturers, are welcome to apply for funding. 


An ALCS Research Grant is not intended to provide full financial support for projects, but to provide ‘top-up’ funding or initial support and encouragement to enable a larger project to get off the ground, for instance to assist with travel expenses to visit an archive.

Members can apply for up to £400 for a personal application and max £500 for a project/conference with institutional backing.

How to apply? 

Only ALCS Members can apply for an ALCS Research Grant. 

There are two application calls per year. Members are invited to send their Grant Application Form by 15 December or 15 June to alcs@sheffield.ac.uk.

Applications will be considered at the Executive Committee meetings in January and July.  You will be informed of the outcome of your application soon after. 

If your application is successful, we will ask you to write a short report on the funded activities for the ALCS Bulletin.

Please note: succesful applicants may not submit applications in consecutive funding cycles.

To request financial support from the ALCS,  download and complete the Grant Application Form on the right and return as an email attachment by 15 June or 15 December to: ALCS@sheffield.ac.uk.

In the application form we will ask you to specify

In addition to the application form, we will ask you to submit a short written reference or letter of support. This may be from a supervisor (for postgraduates), but not from someone else associated with the project. For example, if you are applying for support for a conference, the referee should not be one of the co-organisers.
