Sixth Biennial ALCS Conference

5-7 January 2006, University College London

Trading cultures

ALCS organises a conference every two years. The conference is open to people from all corners of the globe engaged in Low Countries studies and provides an opportunity to demonstrate and discuss current research. It is also a platform for exchange between scholars from the English-language region of Europe and those from the Low Countries and elsewhere in the world. The Association’s general meeting is also held at the conference.

The theme of the conference was trading cultures. With the stress on ‘trading’, the central issue for this theme is the relation between socio-cultural and political-economic values: art and money, beauty and power, culture and commerce, language and politics. With the stress on ‘cultures’,  the central issue becomes the interchange between the Low Countries’ culture(s) and other cultures.
